It is expected that the implementation of the law will contribute to the adaptation of national legislation to European Union law.
The President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky has signed the law On amendments to some legislative acts of Ukraine on improvement of legal protection of geographical indications (No. 123-IX). The law adopted by the Verkhovna Rada on 20 September (bill No. 1065). It provides for the improvement of legal regulation of relations in the sphere of intellectual property concerning the legal sewn geographical indications by making appropriate changes in the Economic and Civil codes of Ukraine, the law On protection of rights to indication of origin of goods, the decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine On state duty.
It is noted that the implementation of the law will contribute to the adaptation of national legislation to European Union law and the implementation of the commitments undertaken by Ukraine in accordance with the Association Agreement with the EU.

According to the document, a geographical indication is the name identifying the origin of goods from a particular geographical place, its particular quality, reputation or other characteristics attributable primarily to the geographical place of origin; while at least one of the stages of production of such goods should be carried out in a geographical area.
